Structure

The HSU is a democratic organisation which has representatives elected from all branches to its two governing bodies, the National Council and National Executive.

National Council

The supreme decision-making body within the union is the national council which currently meets once a year. The council is made up of the national president, national secretary, two trustees and a vice-president. Each branch is entitled to have representatives on the council. The number is determined by the size of the branch with one council member per thousand members.

Branch members elect their national council delegates every four years. As part of its decision-making responsibilities the national council elects the national secretary, national president, national vice-president and union trustees.

National Executive

The national executive runs the union between council meetings. The only difference in its powers is that it cannot add or rescind rules or grant life membership. Executive meets four times a year with the larger state branches taking turns to host the meeting.

The membership of the national executive is made up of the national president, national secretary, two trustees and a vice-president plus the secretary of each branch or their nominee.

Members of the union can read the decisions of the national executive here.
