WorkChoices threatens Health Workers' Safety - Union OHS Training Critical

General
Date: August 2007

The Health Sector is one industry where serious injuries have been continually rising, ranking it the third most dangerous industry after construction and manufacturing. The reduced statutory rights for unions and workers under WorkChoices to ensure safe working environments and the protection of the jobs for workers who are seeking them - will only worsen OHS outcomes across health and community services sectors. Trade Union OHS Training is the only source of training where workers can be sure that they are informed of ALL of their rights and legal processes for ensuring their protection at work. For further information see the attached document and/or contact you local HSU Branch.

This is a presentation highlighting the current threats to health workers health and safety as a consequence of WorkChoices legislation, and the OHS training services offered by the HSU and the ACTU to mitigate these impacts.

One of the most heinous aspects of the WorkChoices legislation is to make it harder for workers to access Occupational Health and Safety Training.

Trade Unions have been the bedrock of ensuring that workers have a legitimate role in ensuring their workplace is safe. In the face of tougher legislation the HSU and the ACTU continue to tailor OHS training to ensure workers and can access it and do their best to keep themselves and their colleagues SAFE AT WORK.

The HSU and ACTU OHS Training has the following additional advantages:

Maximising Economies of Scale and Scope - Collective use of resources to maximise efficiencies and effectiveness

Flexible Delivery: Facilitate learning at the same time as working full time and/or shiftwork. Supporting workers and employers to undertake training

Maximising Existing Knowledge: Recognition of prior learning and cross industry and geographical learning:

Supporting Good Employers: Developing and delivering training options to all employees and managers, where employers recognise the benefits
