US workers have their organising rights threatened04 April 2011In the US, Republican Governors in Wisconsin and Ohio have set about to stop public sector unions bargaining for wage increases and better conditions and superannuation. An article in the New York Times, on 31 March 2011 by Steven Greenhouse, describes the situation in Ohio and Wisconsin as a "push by those states' Republican governors and Republican-dominated legislatures points to a pendulum swing away from what many unions and Democrats see as a fundamental right for public employees: the right to bargain over wages and benefits." The fundamental right of workers to bargain collectively is being attcked by Republican govenors and their state parliaments. In the US today, Americans are spending Dr Martin Luther King Day, fighting these unfair laws. You can follow the action on America's Peak Union Body, the AFL-CIO, website or by following this link http://www.aflcio.org/splash_weareone.cfm?continue=/index.cfm. You can send a message of solidarity on the We Are One facebook campaign page. |
