WA Government threatens quality health care15 November 2010The WA state Government wants to privatise services in WA public hospitals, especially the new Fiona Stanley Hospital. The Government recently announced it wanted international company Serco Group to privatise services such as catering and cleaning at Fiona Stanley Hospital. The HSU and the LHMU oppose the outsourcing. Both Unions have joined together to fight the government's privatisation plan. HSU WA assistant secretary Chris Panizza said the union's members held deep fears about the privatisation push. "HSU members understand that every dollar companies like Serco take out of Fiona Stanley Hospital in profit is a dollar not spent on providing health care to patients." "The HSU is considering joining the LHMU industrial action because we see privatisation as the key threat to quality health care in WA," Mr Panizza said. "Privatisation is bad for health care because private companies have to make a profit," LHMU WA Secretary, Dave Kelly said. "Every dollar of profit companies like Serco take out of our public health system is a dollar not spent on caring for people in our hospitals."
