Disability and Community Sector workers are undervalued and underpaid16 March 2010Disability and Community Sector workers are undervalued and underpaid and not properly respected. Their work has traditionally been seen as “women’s work” and their wages have been restricted as a result. On the 11th of March the Health Services Union joined a coalition of disability and community services unions (ASU, AWU, LHMU and AEU) in kicking off a historic case to raise industry wages and pay workers what they deserve and what they are worth. Our case is supported the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The case has been lodged in Fair Work Australia and will be the first one of its kind to use the new Equal Remuneration provisions in the new Fair Work Act. The industry is largely reliant on Government funding to run its essential services and to pay the wages of the workers. Winning the case will prove that these workers are undervalued - but, the case outcome alone will not correct the injustice. Workers need the Government to fund the outcome of the case to make Equal Pay a reality. We can't do this alone. We need you to help. Politicians need to know that the work disability and community services workers do is undervalued and the government needs to fund the industry properly. Talk to your local HSU Branch for more information about what you can do to help this campaign and get disability workers and community services workers paid what they deserve. This case is set to make history. Join in and be part of it. |
