Howard’s IR Laws Hurt Women

21 June 2007

A recent report on the effect of Howard’s industrial relations laws on women has found that there has been a deterioration of wage equity where women were employed under Australian Workplace Agreements.

The report by the National Foundation for Australian Women was the result of consultation with women's organisations. It describes the concerns of women regarding the IR laws including the deterioration of pay equity through individually negotiated AWAs and other changes, a negative effect on work life balance and job security and the failure of the federal government to monitor the impact of the changes.

It was reported that women experienced a loss of job security from unfair dismissal changes and a loss of dignity, respect and collegial and cooperative arrangements between workers when individual bargaining was introduced.
