Rallies were held in Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne.

HSU members from across Victoria came together for the Melbourne rally which drew an estimated crowd of over 100,000 people.

Members were protesting against John Howard's proposed new work laws which will cut unfair dismissal rights for over 90 per cent of workers and allow employers to offer individual contracts which do not include basic award conditions.

The Industrial Relations Commission will also lose its power to set minimum wages meaning there will be no annual pay rise for 1.6 million workers who are not covered by enterprise agreements.

The rallies were part of a week of action around the country.
