HSU Members Strike over Privatisation

14 October 2003

Hospital staff at the Mater Hospital in Newcastle, NSW, have walked off the job for 24 hours in protest at moves by the Health Department to partly privatise the hospital.

Hundreds of staff voted at 6am today to stopwork until the same time tomorrow.

The HSU has been campaigning against moves by the Health Department to allow the private sector to build and run a redeveloped part of the hospital. Four hour stopworks were held around the state last week.

The concerns of union members were heightened on the weekend by advertisements seeking expressions of interest from private companies.

HSU NSW branch assistant secretary Peter Mylan said the union was concerned hundreds of jobs would be at risk in areas such as grounds, maintenance, clerical, cleaning and catering.
