Disability Campaign Far From Over

13 August 2003

Victorian branches of the Health Services Union have warned of a continuing campaign to stop proposed cuts to funding for community care and disability services.

An estimated crowd of more than 3,000 people packed Treasury Place yesterday to protest the planned productivity cuts which would slash $35 million from community services over three years.

Workers in three Victorian branches of the Health Services Union stand to be among those who will be affected if the proposed cuts go ahead.

Victorian No.1 branch president Jeff Jackson said there was a clear message for the Premier Steve Bracks in the rally.

"Not since Jeff Kennett have we seen multiple community and health unions march together over funding issues like this.

"Steve Bracks needs to listen carefully as this may be the start of serious tensions between the health unions and the government.

"The next step in this campaign for the Victorian No.1 branch will involve a workplace industrial campaign."

Victorian No2 branch secretary Lloyd Williams said the proposed cuts to funding would adversely affect workers conditions and services to the most vulnerable people in our society.
They included those with disabilities, drug and alcohol problems and families with children in need of protection and assistance.

"The community sector is already under severe strain and urgently needs an increase in funding to maintain quality service provision and ensure workplace health and safety standards.

"Whilst the rally was a resounding success, the campaign doesn't end there. We need to maintain our commitment to joint community action against these cruel cuts. The unions and the Victorian Council of Social Service are planning for further action shortly."
