Save our Aussie Weekend

16 August 2012

Right now our weekends are under threat. In a case before Fair Work Australia, employers are applying to take away or cut back weekend penalty rates. If they succeed, it will change the Aussie weekend as we know it. And on top of that, a private Members' Bill will be introduced into Parliament to remove weekend penalty rates for small businesses.

Hundreds of thousands of workers in the retail and hospitality sectors depend on weekend penalty rates as a bedrock of their take-home pay. People in part-time and casual work often work on weekends or at night because they are the only hours available and usually rely on penalty rates to provide a sustainable income.

However you spend them, our Aussie weekends are sacred. For more than 60 years, our special time with family and friends has been protected by penalty rates. If you work on a weekend, you're compensated - nothing could be as fair as that.

Some things are sacred. Don't let them destroy our Aussie weekends too.

Adequate compensation for working anti-social hours is part of what makes a secure job.

We need your help to save our Aussie weekend, before it disappears forever.

Go to saveourweekend.org.au and sign up to save our Aussie weekend.

By signing, you are saying to employers and politicians that Saturday and Sunday are not just another day of the week but important days for families and communities and should be protected.
