Health Services Union Members Rally to Oppose Unfair Work Laws

30 June 2006

Health Services Union members were amongst hundreds of thousands that rallied around the country to oppose unfair work laws this week.

National Secretary of the Health Services Union, Craig Thomson, stated that "The rallies are a reflection of the wide spread dissatisfaction with recent changes to Industrial Relations."

In Melbourne the city streets were filled with people, converging on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets from four points around the city. Speakers at the rally included workers who themselves had already been affected by the changes introduced by the Federal government earlier in the year.

Rallies were held throughout the country with large rallies in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth and in other cities and regional centres.

Craig Thomson said that "The huge number of people who continue coming to these rallies is a clear indication of the depth of opposition to the recent changes."

"The Health Services Union will continue to campaign against these laws until there is a change."
