Home Campaigns Your Rights At Work News
New ads released on cuts to our rights at work27 September 2005A series of new TV advertisements has been released by the ACTU as part of the campaign against planned changes to work laws. Unions are funding the ads in an effort to alert people to the very real impact of the changes proposed by the Howard Government. The ads feature real-life stories of people already affected by the reduction in work rights the Federal Government has brought about. The ads particularly focus on the dangers of Australian Workplace Agreements (individual contracts) which some employers see as a way of cutting costs. The Howard Government's changes also include taking away the right of the independent umpire, the Industrial Relations Commission to set the wages of 1.6 million workers covered by awards. Anybody working in a firm with less than 100 staff will also lose protection against unfair dismissal. Employers will also be able to offer staff AWA's which undercut the award and include only five basic conditions: a minimum hourly rate of pay, sick leave, four weeks annual leave, unpaid parental leave and a 38 hour week.
