Church leaders join the protest over cuts to rights at work29 June 2005Australian churches have joined the union protest campaign against unfair changes to workplace laws saying that family living standards would suffer. The National Council of Churches which represents the Anglican, Catholic and Uniting Churches said that international competitiveness should not be achieved at the expense of Australian workers and their families. Reverend John Henderson said that: "The value of each worker is not as a commodity but as a person, as a human being loved by God. Our community has values that are more important than economics." The church leaders have sought a meeting with the Prime Minister John Howard to express their concerns. Churches are the latest to join the union campaign which also has strong support from community groups. Even state leaders of the Liberal and National parties in Queensland and WA have expressed opposition to the changes. Contact Details Health Services Union of Australia hsu@hsu.net.au |
