HSU vows to oppose changes to rights at work15 April 2005The HSU will play an active role in the union campaign against the Federal Government's changes to workplace laws which aim to reduce the rights of working Australians.
A meeting of the HSU's national executive has resolved to fight the attempts to water down awards, make it easier to sack people and harder to get a pay rise. HSU national secretary Craig Thomson said it was a critical time for all unions. "People need to realise that what the Federal Government wants to do is to interfere in the workplace in favour of employers," he said. "This is all about reducing the fairness in the workplace and making it harder for people to enjoy the wages and conditions they deserve. "Unions around the country are gearing up to fight these proposed changes and the HSU will be at the forefront of that campaign." The resolution passed by the union's national executive states: "The HSU executive opposes the Howard government's attempts to irrevocably alter Australia's industrial relations system to deny workers their basic rights. The HSU is committed to mounting a strong campaign against attempts by the government to:
These changes if enacted will place unfair powers in the hands of employers and reduce the rights of employees across Australia. The HSU Executive resolves that defending workers rights is the number one priority for all officers and staff of the union. To this end the HSU Executive today laid out a plan of action that will see the HSU at the forefront of defending its member's rights from these government attacks. National Executive authorises the officers of the union to conduct and coordinate a national campaign in conjunction with the ACTU and the state trades and labour councils. As part of that campaign the union will keep members across the country informed of the proposed changes and organise workplace meetings and activities to allow them to get involved in protecting their rights.
