Coalition $900 million commitment for Perth hospitals

20 December 2004

The Liberal National Coalition has released a position statement on Perth hospitals which includes lifting bed numbers by 620 over the next decade and relieving the pressure on the major hospitals.

The $900 million Coalition plan includes:

· Maintaining Sir Charles Gairdner and Royal Perth hospitals as specialist tertiary hospitals with a focus on diagnostics and treatment of cancer and trauma respectively.

· Developing these hospitals into Centres of Excellence in their respective fields with major redevelopments at both facilities. ($100 million)

· Development of two new general hospital campuses at the Joondalup Health Campus in the northern suburbs and next to the St John of God Hospital at Murdoch. Both sites to feature co-located facilities with 350-bed government-owned and run public hospitals alongside the private hospitals with sharing of common services. Both projects to be initiated in the first term. (approx $300 million)

· Relocation of King Edward Memorial Hospital to the Queen Elizabeth II site in Nedlands (in its second term). ($153 million)

· Upgrade Princess Margaret Hospital ($50 million)

· Upgrade Rockingham-Kwinana, Armadale-Kelmscott and Swan District Hospitals to 300-bed facilities. ($208 million)

The plan also includes a commitment to put more resources into community hospitals to try and ease the pressure on the city's major tertiary hospitals.
