Labor promises 1,000 bed southern hospital31 January 2005The HSU today called on the Coalition to match Labor's commitment to open a 1,000 bed southern hospital in Perth. Premier Geoff Gallop announced the hospital yesterday saying it would be constructed at Murdoch, adjacent to the Murdoch St John of God Hospital. The Gallop government has allocated $420 million for stage 1 of the construction of the new southern tertiary hospital, which would see 600 beds open in 2010, increasing to 1,000 beds by 2020. The hospital would be named after 2003 Australian of the Year, child health researcher Professor Fiona Stanley. HSU state secretary Dan Hill said that both sides of politics needed to demonstrate they were planning to adequately address the growing demand for services in the southern suburbs. "We need to continue to improve our health system to ensure WA residents receive the best possible hospital care," he said. "The Government's commitment is a major step in the right direction. "However the coalition's current plan, which is extremely light on detail, is only for a 350 bed hospital at Murdoch. "Current projections show that is not going to be sufficient to do the job both in catering for the growing population and in the provision of specialist services. "The southern hospital cannot be the poor cousin of the hospital network in Perth. "It must be of equal status to that north of the river to provide the best balance of resources across the city and ensure a full range of services are available for the people of the southern suburbs."
