HSU calls for more detail on health policies28 January 2005The Health Services Union said today that the nurses'union was foolish to back the Coalition in the election before both sides of politics had outlined their commitments on healthcare and to staff working in public hospitals.
"Our members have advised us that their top three issues are extra funding for health, better staffing levels and a commitment to not contract out public health services," HSU state secretary Dan Hill said. "We do not have the answers from either side about how they will tackle these issues and improve our health system. "A hasty deal to deliver wage increases is short-sighted and foolish. "We want the best deal for staff and people using the health system not a political fix to suit their leadership like the nurses' union have stitched up. "The additional $50 million has to come from somewhere. "If it is from the health budget then do the Opposition intend trying to take it from our members, or from cuts to patient services?" "The nurses additional claims were costed at $90 million by the Health Department and it would seem that some serious concessions have been made in this backroom deal between the nurses union boss Mark Olson and the Liberals. "It is not surprising that Mark Olson couldn't reach an agreement with Labor when his real aim seems to have been to do a secret deal with the Liberal Opposition. "The agreement reached appears to only commit to negotiations on improvements in conditions with no guaranteed outcomes. "This deal is a political stunt which detracts from the key health issue in this state election which is who will have the best plan for ensuring our public health system is a world beater into the future." "What we need to know from our politicians is what they are going to do and how they are going to pay for it. "On February 26 we are urging voter's to "Put Health First" -who will you trust to make our health system a world beater - Geoff Gallop or Colin Barnett?"
