Home Campaigns Put Health First News
WA election campaign underway24 January 2005The Western Australian election campaign has begun and the HSU is urging all political parties to make health their number one issue. The HSU branch in WA will be running its own campaign in the lead-up to the ballot on February 26 to get more for healthcare in the election called Put Health First. Members around the country and anybody with an interest in health can get involved in that campaign straight away by sending a message to politicians in the state. HSU WA secretary Dan Hill said that the union believed that Western Australia has a world class public health system due in no small part to the hard work and dedication of HSU members and other healthworkers. "We need to have some perspective on our health system and not jump in and say there is a crisis when there are really challenges to be met and obstacles to be overcome," Mr Hill said. "The key issue in this state election is who will have the best plan for ensuring our public health system is a world beater into the future. "What we need to know from our politicians is what they are going to do and how they are going to pay for it. "The health system will need more money in the future. WA has an ageing and growing population. "The WA public demand the best in health services with the latest equipment and techniques. None of this comes cheap." After a extensive survey of members the HSU is pushing for commitments from the major parties on:
Mr Hill said more beds were also needed to unblock our emergency departments, extra staff and fully funded and costed plans to ensure new hospitals and health services are constructed and existing ones upgraded. "Labor and the Coalition have different plans for the future of health," he said. "We say those plans need to meet the reality and honesty tests. "We do not need to hear that improvements to our health system will be funded through pie-in-the-sky savings on administration and support services. "That has been the failed mantra of successive governments and has never been true. Now more than ever there is no fat in the health system. "On February 26 we urge voter's to "Put Health First" - Who will you trust to make our health system a world beater - Geoff Gallop or Colin Barnett?"
