HSU supports national review of health system27 October 2004The Productivity Commission has become the latest organisation to call for a national review of the health system. In a review of national competition policy reforms the organisation said an independent review was "a critical first step in achieving cooperative solutions to deep-seated structural problems". HSU national secretary Craig Thomson said the union had consistently argued that reform of commonwealth/state responsibilities in health was a critical step in improving services. "The current system where the federal government has responsibilities in some areas and the states in others leads to ineffeciency, cost-shifting and most importantly, gaps in services. "While much work has already been done in this area a new inquiry would be welcomed as long as the state and federal governments fully support it."
