Campaign Message from the National Secretary Craig Thomson

16 December 2003
HSU National Secretary Craig Thomson
HSU National Secretary Craig Thomson

The Minimum Wage Case comes around every year but for some reason there is a lot of confusion among workers and the general community about what it is.

Let me try and clear up some of that confusion.

Firstly it is not just a case for the lowest paid workers in the community although they are the ones that need an increase the most. A total of 1.6 million workers across the country or one in five are on award rates of pay and are entitled to the rise that is granted.

Secondly it is not some hand-out from the government or employers. Unions including the HSU work hard with the ACTU to push their case for a decent pay rise to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission which makes the final decision. The harder unions and their members work to put a strong case across the higher the pay rise the AIRC is likely to award.

It is also important for all healthworkers to remember that whether they get the increase awarded or not it is an important benchmark for other wage outcomes.

So if you are covered by an enterprise agreement it will be easier to negotiate a decent increase if there has been significant movement in minimum wage rates.

I am encouraging all members to get involved in supporting the minimum wages push in 2004.

Why not send a letter to John Howard and let him know why the government should support the claim of the ACTU and unions for the first time ever?

You can also register for free email news updates which will tell you about the campaign and other HSU news.

If you are a worker on award wages why not tell us your story so we can put it on the website as a way of informing other people how much people on minimum wages deserve a pay rise.
